  LEARN MORE ABOUT COFFEE

WHAT MAKES A BLEND

Whether tea leaves or coffee beans, blends are the unique combination of different types of coffees which are grown in the different, indigenous climates around the World.

These beans take on the qualities of each climate, which are the character and flavor they become and illuminate. These lands lend their unique soil and air qualities to the leaf or itself, offering us, as the drinker, the benefits of their purity and minerals.

Since each coffee bean is invested with its own special qualities, they equally contribute to the character and flavor of the blend. Which, in turn, makes each blend a unique combination or recipe!

As in all the great cooking houses of the world, where chefs lend their own special character and charm to their flavors, so too, does the great coffeehouse purveyor lend their knowledge to the blend produced.

We here at Rohrs have been guarding and developing the character and flavor of our blends for over one hundred years. Each recipe is a specially guarded and unique experience. Many generations have enjoyed our coffee.

COFFEE TASTING TIPS

AROMA
Since taste and smell are one in the same experience a coffee's aroma is very important. Simply put, aroma is the fragrance produced by the coffee's aromatic oils that are released is roasting. You can experience a coffee's aroma in the bean, grind or brew.

ACIDITY
A commonly misunderstood term, acidity can actually be a "good" feature in coffee. While coffee that is low in acid tend to taste smooth and are gentle on weak stomachs, acid is necessary for a coffee's overall taste. In fact, some of the most flavorful coffees have a considerable amount of acidity.

BODY
Another frequently misunderstood term. Body actually refers to the *feel* not the strength of the coffee. Thus, a coffee can be full-bodied but not strong. Body is a desirable feature, it has a thickness and a lingering flavor that envelops the taste buds.

BITTERNESS
A naturally inherent feature in some types of coffee beans, bitterness can add *tang*and flavor to certain coffees. Another desirable taste sensation is a musty or earthy flavor that occurs when the beans are intentionally exposed to air and allowed to ferment slightly.

FLAVOR
The combination of all the coffee tasting components and the true reward of the total experience.

BREWING COFFEE

Make sure the grind is compatible with your coffee maker Use fine grind coffee with cone drip coffee makers.

-----------------------------------

Start with a clean coffee maker. Clean and rinse your carafe or coffee maker after each use and use descaler at least once a month. Hard water leaves sediments that affect taste.

-----------------------------------

Use the freshest ground coffee or beans available. Rohr's ground coffee assures optimum freshness.

-----------------------------------

Measure carefully. Use two teaspoons of fine grind coffee for each six ounces of water. For coarser grinds, double the coffee quantity.

-----------------------------------

Always use fresh cold water for filtering. Artificially softened water can affect taste. Never use distilled water.

-----------------------------------

Brew carefully. With a manual cone filter system moisten the grounds with boiled water and allow to soak, then gently add the remaining water.

-----------------------------------

Make only as much coffee as needed. Never re-heat cold coffee and never brew boiled coffee.

-----------------------------------

Store coffee in an airtight container and keep it cold. Use the freezer for long term storage.
